Scopel Named Cougars Strength and Conditioning Coach

Scopel new hire

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Spenser Scopel as the first Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Scopel comes to Columbia after serving as the Personal Training Director at Fit City Gym in St. Louis, Missouri.

“I am very excited to join the Columbia athletics family. Coach Arnold has an unparalleled vision for the future and what strength and conditioning can do for Cougar athletics. I look forward to growing with this college as we lay a stronger foundation to continue the tradition of winning.” said Scopel.

Prior to his time in St. Louis, Scopel was an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University of North Alabama for three years. There he assisted with the planning and implementation of training sessions for all teams. Spenser also spent time interning at Iowa State University and also at Rice University.

Scopel earned his Masters of Science in Kinesiology from University of North Alabama and his Bachelors in Exercise Science from University of Missouri-St. Louis. His credentials include NCSA-CSCS, NSCA-CPT, and USAW-Sports Performance Coach certification amongst others.

Athletic Director James Arnold described Scopel as a perfect fit, “It was obvious from the start of the search process that Spenser would be a perfect fit. I can’t imagine a better person to build our strength and conditioning department from the ground-up. He checked all of the boxes and then some, not to mention we had an immediate connection that I knew would benefit all of our student-athletes and the entire campus community.”
