Sophia Rivera

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri track and field team’s senior Sophia Rivera has been named SEC Women’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Rivera set a new program record and climbed to the top of the national leaderboard in the javelin with a mark of 57.67m / 189-2. The throw broke Skylar Ciccolini’s previous top performance of 56.08m / 184-0 set on April 30, 2021.

The accolade is the latest in the decorated career for the Brentwood, Mo. native. Rivera earned All-American honors last season after a ninth-place finish in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

A member of the Puerto Rico national team, she represented the country at the North American-Central-American-Caribbean Championships this summer.

In the classroom, the senior is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member.

Rivera is the second Missouri female to claim the outdoor weekly award and the first since Kearsten Peoples on March 25, 2014.
