Mizzou Women’s Basketball Downs Saint Louis on the Road

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women’s Basketball (3-0) went on the road for the first time during the 2021-22 season and downed Saint Louis (1-2) by a score of 69-55. The Tigers move to 3-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

Four Tigers finished the night in double figures, led by freshman guard Izzy Higginbottom, who added a career-high 17 points. Aijha Blackwell put up another double-double in her return to the St. Louis area with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Despite shooting a season-low 38.7 percent from the field, Mizzou was able to take advantage of a pair of runs to put the Billikens away.

TURNING POINT

After falling behind 8-4 early in the contest, the Tigers went on an 11-0 run to jump out in front. Mizzou would not give up the lead.

Saint Louis would cut the Mizzou lead to just eight at the half. After a couple slow second half starts for Mizzou in the first two games of the year, the Tigers were looking for a productive third quarter. After the Billikens added the first bucket of the half, Mizzou went on a 14-2 run to extend the lead to 18 points at 48-30.

TOP TIGERS

Izzy Higginbottom scored 17 points on only six shot attempts. The freshman went 5-for-6 from the field and drained all four of her free throw attempts.

Aijha Blackwell dropped 15 points and added 14 rebounds on the night. She has added a double-double in each game of the 2021-22 season and leads the SEC in the category.

Lauren Hansen added 16 points for the Tigers with a team-leading three steals. Hansen adds her fifth game in double figures for Mizzou and her second-highest total after being held to just three points in her first two games.

Hayley Frank dropped 11 points with six rebounds for Mizzou. She has been in double figures in all three games this season.

NOTES

Aijha Blackwell currently holds each of the top two rebounding performances in the Southeastern Conference. Her season-low of 13 boards would be tied for first among the rest of the league.  

Blackwell has grabbed 13 or more rebounds in three consecutive games for the second time in her career. (1/24-31/21).

Izzy Higginbottom’s 17 points are the most by a Mizzou freshman since the 2019-20 season.

Mizzou moves to 3-0 for the first time since 2015-16 where the Tigers opened the season with 13-consecutive victories.
