Mizzou Suffers One-Run Loss to Kansas

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball (14-34) brought the potential winning run to the plate on Tuesday night, but was unable to complete the comeback in a 9-8 loss to Kansas (29-24) at Taylor Stadium.

Kansas claimed the early lead as a catcher’s interference and an error allowed an unearned run to score in the top of the first. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs on senior Clayton Peterson’s double off the left field wall for a 2-1 lead.

The Jayhawks responded with a three-run third inning sparked by a pair of bunt singles. A two-run double gave the lead back to Kansas and a sac fly made it 4-2 Jayhawks. Kansas capitalized on three walks to push across three more runs in the fourth and extend the lead to 7-2.

Sophomore Luke Mann trimmed the deficit to 7-4 with a two-run, opposite field home run in the fourth. The long ball was Mann’s second in as many games and team-leading sixth on the season.

After each team plated a run in the sixth, Mizzou closed the gap to 8-7 with a two-run homer off the bat of Clayton Peterson in the eighth inning. Kansas tacked on an insurance run with a two-out knock in the ninth which proved to be the difference. Alex Peterson legged out an infield single to pull Mizzou within 9-8 in the ninth but was caught stealing at second to end the game.

Hear from the Skipper

Head coach Steve Bieser on Tuesday’s contest…

“I think we kind of misconstrued how we wanted to play against Kansas. Definitely against Mississippi State we wanted to be very aggressive but that wasn’t the game plan today. We knew that if we would just stay back and play the game properly, we didn’t have to force anything and that good things would happen for us; but for whatever reason we just played very reckless on the bases and had too many errors to win a ballgame and didn’t pitch very well.”

#MIZ Takeaways

  • Lancaster entered the game and struck out the first six batters he faced. The six K’s set a career high.
  • Clayton Peterson continued his torrid run at the plate with a three-hit, four-RBI game. Both marks are season highs.
  • Mann has hit in four-straight games and has back-to-back games with a home run and multiple RBI.
