Mizzou Drops Heartbreaker in Extras at No. 22 LSU

Ian Lohse

BATON ROUGE, La. – The 10,919 fans in attendance Friday night at Alex Box Stadium got a show as Missouri baseball and No. 22 LSU battled into extra innings with the homestanding Tigers taking a 4-3, walk-off win on a Cade Doughty single in the 10th.

Mizzou (22-14, 5-12 SEC) drew level in the eighth inning on a Luke Mann solo home run. Josh Day was the lone Tiger to record a multi-hit evening, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.

On the mound, freshman Tony Neubeck produced his second consecutive quality start with six innings of three-run work. The left-hander surrendered three runs while striking out a pair to give Mizzou a chance heading into the late innings. Sophomore Ian Lohse dazzled in relief with three perfect innings. The southpaw punched out two LSU Tigers to help send the game to extras.

For LSU, the Bayou Bengals used three solo homers to produce their early damage. Brayden Jobert lifted one of the homers as part of a 2-for-4 day to lead LSU.

IMPACT INNING

After Missouri stranded a pair in the top of the ninth and 10th innings, LSU capitalized on its chance in extras. Pinch-hitter Josh Stevenson doubled to left center on a ball that just snuck under the diving glove of Ty Wilmsmeyer. A groundout moved Stevenson to third before Mizzou elected to intentionally walk Jacob Berry to put runners at the corners.

Austin Troesser (3-1) worked to an 0-2 count against Doughty, but the latter found a fastball offering and laced it to left center for the walk-off win.

FROM THE SKIP

Coach Bieser on LSU’s homers and the extra-inning loss…

“I’ve always said solo shots are not going to beat you. We’re going to make some mistakes on the mound, but I’d rather make mistakes throwing strikes than making mistakes walking guys. If we can keep guys off base and not give free bases and they hit two or three solo shots, that’s three runs in a game and we’ve got to be better than scoring two or three runs a game.”
