Defense Stands Tall in Win over Harris-Stowe

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College men’s basketball team limited visiting Harris-Stowe University to a season-low 23.5 percent shooting in an 70-42 win Tuesday at The Arena of Southwell Complex.
 
The Cougars held the Hornets to 1-of-14 from three-point range for the game and just six field goals in the first half.
 
Columbia improved to 18-7 (10-3 AMC) with the win, while Harris-Stowe dropped to 7-13 (6-7 AMC). The Cougars remain in first place in the AMC standings with a half game lead.
 
Tony Burks (22 points), Marlon Allen (11 points, nine rebounds) and Collin Parker (10 points) scored in double figures for Columbia, which had a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint and made 24-of-35 at the free-throw line.
 
Columbia limited Harris-Stowe to 1-of-11 shooting and held a 7-3 advantage in the first six minutes of the contest. Trendon Tisdale’s three-pointer ignited an 11-2 run to give the Cougars a 20-11 lead with 6:38 to play before half. The lead grew to double figures (26-16) after a layup by Parker.
 
The Cougars took a 33-16 lead to halftime after holding Harris-Stowe to 20.0 percent (6-30) shooting from the field. Burks had nine points to lead Columbia, who hit 14-of-20 free-throws in the first half.
 
Leading by 10 five minutes into the second half, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run to take a convincing 47-28 lead with 13:09 to play.
 
Valdy Zephir lead Harris-Stowe with nine points off the bench.
 
The Cougars host William Woods University Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m.
 
NOTES: Columbia leads the all-time series with Harris-Stowe 65-7, and has won four-straight meetings … The Cougars are 13-2 at home this season … Burks and Parker have both scored in double figures in 23 of 25 games played … Burks has scored over 20 points in five-straight games … The 42 points allowed are the lowest since 1-4-20 (83-38 win vs. Lindenwood-Belleville.
