Cougars Sweep Their Way to 2-0

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College volleyball team swept their first two matches of the 2021 campaign, picking up wins against Kansas Christian and Baker (Kan.).

Columbia (1-0) vs. Kansas Christian (0-1)
Set 1: Columbia 25 | Kansas Christian 5

The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Cougars came roaring back, scoring the following nine straight points to take command of the set. The Cougars held Kansas Christian to a -.333 attacking percentage while hitting .500 themselves.

Set 2: Columbia 25 | Kansas Christian 9
A service error by Columbia made the score 14-8, but the Cougars scored 10-straight points and cruised to the 25-9 win.

Set 3: Columbia 25 | Kansas Christian 6
Columbia carried the momentum into the final set, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Kansas Christian scored back-to-back points, but Columbia tallied 13 of the last 15 points to secure the sweep.

Another strong start for the Cougars paved the way for another dominant set, as they raced out to a 17-4 lead highlighted by three service aces from Jaqueline Silva.

Set 2: Columbia 25 | Baker 14
In set two, Columbia raced out to a 6-1 lead with kills each from Sidney Branson. The Wildcats clawed their way back within three points (15-12), but the Cougars tallied three straight points to take an 18-12 advantage. Baker scored to make the set 19-14 before Columbia ran off with the set’s final six points.  

Set 3: Columbia 25 | Baker 14
With the score of 5-4 Columbia, the Cougars put down six-of-seven points for the 11-5 advantage. The Cougars hit .364 with 11 kills in the third set to earn the sweep.

The Cougars are in action on Friday and Saturday as they take part in the Hampton Inn Classic. Columbia will face Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Friday at 1:00 PM, followed by John Brown (Ark.) at 7:00 PM.
