Cougars Go 0-2 on Day One of the CSM/United Sports Academy Labor Day Classic

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College volleyball team dropped their first two matches at the CSM/United Sports Academy Labor Day Classic hosted at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The Cougars are now 7-2 on the season.
 
Columbia (7-1) vs. Viterbo (9-1)
Set 1: Columbia 25 | Viterbo 22
The Cougars came out strong, scoring the first four points thanks to the help of three attack errors by Viterbo. The V-Hawks answered with the next five straight to take the lead, 5-4. Neither team would pull away from the other as Viterbo held a 22-21 advantage. However, the Cougars closed the set by scoring the final four points to take the set.
 
Set 2: Columbia 25 | Viterbo 21
The two teams continued to match each other point for point in the second set. The V-Hawks would extend a slight lead out to 17-12 before the Cougars came roaring back. A kill by Ellie Rockers tied the set at 20-20, but Viterbo tallied the next point to regain the lead. The Cougars then scored the final five points, capped off by a block from Sidney Branson and Bailee Ulery to go up two sets to none.
 
Set 3: Columbia 21 | Viterbo 25
Set three saw the V-Hawks go on a big run (8-1) to a 20-15 lead. Columbia tried to make a comeback, as a Viterbo attack error closed the gap to 24-21, but the V-Hawks took the next point and the set to stay alive.
 
Set 4: Columbia 20 | Viterbo 25
Viterbo carried that momentum into set four, racing out to a quick 7-2 lead. The Cougars got back to within three points (12-9), but that was as close as they would get as Viterbo took the set, 25-20.
 
Set 5: Columbia 14 | Viterbo 16
The two teams were tied at 12-12 in the final set before back-to-back kills from Sidney Branson and Ellie Rockers to give the Cougars match point. After a Viterbo timeout, the V-Hawks answered with the following four points to win the set and the match.

Columbia (7-2) vs. Grand View (2-7)
Set 1: Columbia 26 | Grand View 28
Columbia received a kill by Sidney Branson to give them a 15-11 advantage, but the Vikings scored the following three points to get within one point (15-14). Columbia continued to lead and extended the lead back to three (20-17) on a Bailee Ulery kills. Grand View stayed strong and took the lead at 25-24 before the Cougars tied the opening set at 25 apiece. With the score tied at 26-26, Grand View scored the final two points to take the set.
 
Set 2: Columbia 18 | Grand View 25
In the second set, the Cougars came out strong, leading 6-4 after a Danielle Prior kill. The two teams would split the following points, and Ellie Rockers’ kill gave the Cougars a lead of 14-11. The Vikings would close the set, scoring 14 of the final 18 points to take the set and 2-0 lead.
 
Set 3: Columbia 22 | Grand View 25
Trying to extend the match, the Cougars jumped out to a 13-10 lead after Janae Johnson found the floor with a kill. The Vikings took the lead after scoring the following five points. Trailing 18-14, Columbia scored five straight to regain the lead at 19-18. The Vikings picked up the following three points to take the 21-19 lead, but the Cougars battled back to tie the must-win set at 22-22. Coming out of a Grand View timeout, the Vikings scored the following three points to win the match.
