Four and five-run innings helped the New York Yankees coast to an 11-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals Friday night.
New York plated four in the second on a pair of two-run homers from Lyle Overbay and Ichiro Suzuki. Jarrod Dyson provided a quick answer from the Royals with a three-run bomb of his own. After Overbay doubled a run home in the fourth, Alex Gordon tied it with a two-run double in the fifth.
Overbay started a five-run rally in the sixth with his fifth double with the inning also featuring run-scoring hits from Chris Nelson, Brett Gardner and Robinson Cano.
The Yankees tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on an Overbay double, his fifth RBI.
New York and Kansas City meet for the middle game Saturday evening with the Royals’ ace James Shields facing the Yankees’ Andy Pettitte at 7:10 PM.
