Adam Wainwright gave the San Francisco Giants a taste of their own medicine Wednesday night at AT&T Park.
The St. Louis starter allowed only four hits in 7.2 scoreless innings of work, and the Cardinals made some early runs stand in a 2-0 win over the Giants.
Matt Carpenter was outstanding at the top of the Cardinals order, driving in the eventual winning run on a third-inning single, and snapping a 26-inning scoreless streak in the process. The St. Louis third baseman ended with a 3-for-4 night, including his RBI. Matt Holliday followed Carpenter’s run-scoring single with one of his own, and from there the night belonged to Wainwright.
The Cardinals ace only struck out one San Francisco batter, but used the entire plate effectively to collect his National League-leading 11th win. Trevor Rosenthal allowed the potential tying run to come to the plate in the ninth, but shut the door to record his 25th save.
St. Louis will try to secure a series win over the Giants Thursday afternoon. Carlos Martinez is scheduled at the Cardinals’ starting pitcher, while San Francisco will send Madison Bumgarner to the hill. Pregame coverage begins at 1:50 pm on ESPN 103.1 and 1580 AM KTGR.
