Rain didn’t dampen the St. Louis Cardinals offense Wednesday night.
Jhonny Peralta’s three-run double in the fifth brought in the eventual winning run in a 7-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium.
A Matt Holliday double in the third brought in Jon Jay for the first Cardinal run of the night, and the next three came in on Peralta’s double. St. Louis scored three more to take a 7-0 lead into the ninth, where Carlos Martinez struggled in relief, allowing all three runs for the Reds. Trevor Rosenthal recorded the final two outs for his 37th save.
Starting pitcher Lance Lynn was brilliant, throwing seven shutout innings with four hits, two walks and five strikeouts. A Milwaukee Brewers loss means the Cardinals moved to within 1.5 games of first place in the NL Central.
St. Louis has an off day Thursday, before starting a Pennsylvania road trip in Philadelphia. The Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright opposes the Phillies’ Kyle Kendrick Friday night. Pregame coverage begins at 5:10 pm Friday on ESPN 103.1 and 1580 AM KTGR.
