Tuesday night’s game at Busch Stadium was indeed a game of inches.
Shane Robinson barely avoided a tag to score the game’s tying run in the seventh inning, and Jon Jay drove home the game-winning tally in the eighth for a 3-2 St. Louis Cardinals win over the Boston Red Sox.
Matt Adams singled in the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth, which Boston answered with a Christian Vazquez sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. After Will Middlebrooks’ grounder allowed a run to score in the seventh, Kolten Wong produced the hit that sent Robinson sliding home later in the inning. Jay’s game-winning hit was the third single in a row for St. Louis in the eighth, sending home A.J. Pierzynski.
The late run made a winner out of reliever Pat Neshek, who struck out the Red Sox side in order in the top of the eighth. Trevor Rosenthal earned his 35th save to seal the win for Neshek.
St. Louis will see a pitching matchup of close friends at Busch Stadium Wednesday night. Cardinals starter Shelby Miller opposes newly-minted Red Sox starter Joe Kelly… the pair were the best men in each others’ weddings. Pregame coverage begins at 6:20 Wednesday on ESPN 103.1 and 1580 AM KTGR.
