James Shields wasn’t going to need much help to win Saturday night at Kauffman Stadium.
The Kansas City Royals starter pitched a complete-game shutout, and Alex Gordon’s fifth-inning home run provided the winning run in a 5-0 win over San Francisco.
Shields threw 109 pitches in his nine-inning outing, scattering four hits and striking out five while walking only one. The Royals provided him with four insurance runs in the seventh, to build on the lead Gordon established. Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar and Jerrod Dyson all drove in one run apiece in the frame.
The Royals are now winners of six straight games and six straight series, and sit 1.5 games back of Detroit for the AL Central lead. They aim for a second-straight series sweep Sunday afternoon at the K. Tim Lincecum takes the hill for San Francisco, against the Royals’ Danny Duffy.
