The Kansas City Royals scored eight runs in the sixth inning en route to a 10-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday night.

Elliot Johnson started the rally with a single and ended it with a three-run homer. In between, the Royals got run-scoring hits from Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez, David Lough and Miguel Tejada. One of the other runs in the inning came home on a wild pitch with Eric Hosmer at the plate.

Johnson victimized his old team with a three hit game, and Ervin Santana did the rest on the mound with seven and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts for his fifth win.

Kansas City has won eight of their last nine games, and has climbed to five games back in the AL Central. The Royals send Luis Mendoza to the hill to face Matt Moore in the second game of the series at 6:10 PM Friday.
