Royals Fall Short Against Braves

The Kansas City Royals were a base hit away from tying or winning the game in the ninth inning but Atlanta Braves closer Craig Kimbrel shut the door on a 4-3 victory Tuesday night.

The Royals led early 1-0 on an RBI-single by Billy Butler, but back-to-back doubles by Jordan Schafer and Jason Heyward gave the Braves the lead.

Eric Hosmer and Heyward traded solo home runs before the ninth when KC got the first two on with a walk and a single. Kimbrel struck out two around an intentional walk, before inducing a game-ending flyout to Alcides Escobar.

The Royals have dropped five of their last seven games, and went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Luis Mendoza faces Mike Minor in the short-lived series finale at 7:10 PM Wednesday night.
