The Kansas City Royals forced extra innings, and gutted out an 8-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
A bases loaded walk, followed by a grand slam by Alex Gordon made up the final margin for KC, who stayed in first place in the AL Central. Justin Verlander and James Shields dueled to a stalemate, with Verlander surrendering two runs and Shields giving up three.
The teams earned a split of the series after the opener was rained out.
Kansas City returns home to take on another divisional foe Friday, hosting the Cleveland Indians to start a three-game series at 7:10 PM.
