Cleveland Solidifies Second Place Over Royals
The Cleveland Indians put up a three-run sixth inning on Luis Mendoza that the Kansas City Royals could not overcome, as the Tribe took the finale, 6-3.
Mendoza allowed five straight batters to reach including an RBI-single by Mike Aviles and a bases-loaded walk to Carlos Santana to give the Indians a 3-2 lead. Michael Brantley added the final run on a sacrifice fly off of Tim Collins.
The Tribe added insurance runs on a sacrifice fly by Aviles in the seventh and Brantley’s solo homer in the eighth. KC attempted a ninth-inning comeback as Eric Hosmer doubled home Alcides Escobar, but Salvador Perez grounded into an unconventional double play to end the game.
The win for Cleveland leaves them 3.5 games out of first, 1.5 games ahead of Kansas City.
The Royals’ road trip, which started at 4-1, ends with two straight losses. After a day off Thursday, KC returns home Friday to start a three-game series with AL Central Foe, the Chicago White Sox.
