A fifth inning that saw three consecutive doubles for the St. Louis Cardinals catalyzed the home side to a 6-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves Thursday night.‘
After falling behind from a Justin Upton home run in the top of the frame, the Cards struck back in the home half. Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday each had two-baggers to plate three runs and put the Cards ahead to stay. The Redbirds tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh on a wild pitch and a David Freese single.
Joe Kelly continued his mastery on the mound going six innings allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts, winning for the fourth time in five starts. The Cards have won seven of the eight games Kelly has started since becoming a regular member of the rotation on July 6th.
