Cards Take Philly Opener

Carlos Beltran broke a 3-3 tie with an eighth-inning home that proved to be the difference in a St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Cardinals grabbed the initial lead in the fourth only to have the Phillies equalize in the sixth. Both teams traded runs in the seventh inning before Beltran’s blast.

Adam Wainwright becomes the first Cardinal to three wins, with a quality seven-inning start where he struck out four. Edward Mujica worked around a Trevor Rosenthal jam in the eighth and earned a four-out save. Mujica stranded the tying and winning runs in scoring position to end the ball game.

The Cardinals send Jaime Garcia to the hill to take on Roy Halladay for Friday’s matchup. Coverage on the Zimmer Sports Network (93.9 FM, 94.3 FM and AM 900) starts at 5:10 PM.
