The Cardinals pounded out 14 hits in the Major League debut of pitcher Tyler Lyons, and St. Louis took the series over San Diego with a 5-3 victory.
The Redbirds plated three runs in the first on a Matt Holliday triple, an Allen Craig single and a Daniel Descalso double. St. Louis added runs in the second after a run came in on a double play and the fifth when Yadier Molina singled another home. Molina had four hits on the night, raising his average to .333.
San Diego struck in the seventh with a Jedd Gyorko home run, and got the first two runners on in the eighth but couldn’t score. Alexi Amarista hit a two-run single and the Padres got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Chris Denorfia grounded out to end the game.
Lyons went seven innings, allowing just the one run, striking out four in his first big-league start and win.
St. Louis heads to Los Angeles to start a three-game series with the Dodgers on Friday, with Lance Lynn facing Chris Capuano. Coverage begins on the Zimmer Sports Network at 8:15 PM.
