The force was with the St. Louis Cardinals on Star Wars Night at Busch Stadium… the force of 14 hits.
Matt Adams had a three-hit night, Kolten Wong hit a home run for the second straight game, and St. Louis beat Pittsburgh by a 5-2 score Wednesday night.
The Cardinals took the lead on a two-run double by Adams in the first inning, though he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Pittsburgh’s Neil Walker hit a solo homer in the second inning to cut the St. Louis lead to 2-1, but a Jhonny Peralta double in the third frame drove in a run to recapture a two-run edge. The teams traded runs in the fourth, with Matt Holliday singling home a run to make it 4-2. Wong’s solo shot came in the seventh inning to provide the final score.
The win came with a cost. Yadier Molina left the game in the third after apparently injuring his right thumb on a slide into third base in the second inning. Manager Mike Matheny said the Cardinals would get MRI results from the injured hand on Thursday.
St. Louis goes for a series sweep of the Pirates Thursday evening, when Shelby Miller opposes Edinson Volquez. Pregame coverage begins at 5:20 pm on ESPN 103.1 and 1580 AM KTGR.
