Cards Improve to 4-2 On Road Trip
An eighth-inning insurance run proved to be handy for the St. Louis Cardinals as they staved off a New York Mets ninth-inning rally to win 2-1 Thursday.
The Cards tallied on a third-inning triple by Matt Carpenter, and Allen Craig brought home Carlos Beltran with his eighth-inning single.
Marlon Byrd homered in the ninth for the Mets, and they got the potential tying-run as far as third base in the frame. Edward Mujica bore down to strike out Josh Satin to end the game and pick up his 19th save in as many tries.
Adam Wainwright became the first hurler to 10 wins this season with seven scoreless frames including six strikeouts, one of which took him over the 1,000 punch-out mark. Matt Harvey lost for the first time this season for New York after seven innings with one-run allowed and seven strikeouts.
The Cardinals head to Miami for a three-game series against the Marlins with Jake Westbrook making his return to the rotation from an elbow injury. Westbrook opposes Cuban-defector Jose Fernandez, with coverage beginning on ESPN 100.5 and 103.1 KTGR at 5:15 PM.
