A 26-run series from the St. Louis Cardinals offense turned the NL Central race on its head as the Redbirds swept the Pirates with a 9-2 win Sunday.
Four Cardinals had multiple hits and three of them drove in runs with Jon Jay, Matt Carpenter and David Freese contributing to the effort. St. Louis pitcher Michael Wacha did the deed with the bat and the arm, driving in two runs and throwing seven shutout innings and allowing only two hits.
The Pirates came to town with a 1.5 game lead in the division, but left the Gateway City with a 1.5 game deficit and a four-game losing streak.
The Cardinals stay home to take on the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game set beginning Tuesday on KTGR at 6:20 PM.
