Jhonny Peralta had a two-home run game and the Cardinals took the series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning 7-0 Sunday.
Peralta’s multi-homer game was just the third for a shortstop in Cardinals history, and his six home runs are double the total of any other Cardinal. Adam Wainwright did the rest with eight innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits and striking out seven. Carlos Martinez came on to strike out the side in the ninth.
Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter each had multiple hits and both scored a run.
The Redbirds shook up their offense after the game, announcing the promotion of OF Randal Grichuk and IF Greg Garcia. Grichuk was hitting .310 in a crowded Memphis outfield, and Garcia kept a .267 mark.
Kolten Wong, who was not in the starting lineup Sunday, is sent down, despite leading the Cardinals with a .375 average in Spring Training. Wong’s average dipped to .225 and Shane Robinson, averaging .100 was the other roster casualty.
St. Louis starts a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers Monday as Michael Wacha faces Yovanni Gallardo. You can hear the game on ESPN 103.1 and 1580 AM at 6:20 PM.
