St. Louis put up a strong effort to tie Monday night’s game in Miami, but it wasn’t enough.
Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit two home runs and made a fabulous diving catch, and his team held off a late Cardinals rally to hang onto a 6-5 win over St. Louis.
Stanton’s blast in the first gave the home team a 2-0 lead, and his 470-foot bomb in the third made it a three-run edge. St. Louis tied the game after an RBI hit from AJ Pierzynski and two-run homer from Jon Jay in the fourth, but the Marlins tallied two in the bottom of that frame. A Sam Freeman throwing error and Pierzynski throwing error helped another run come home for Miami in the seventh. Kolten Wong tripled in a run, and Matt Holliday drove in another in the ninth, but Steve Cishek hung on for his 30th save.
Shelby Miller took the loss after allowing five runs in five innings, along with eight hits. Adam Wainwright opposes Jarred Cosart from the pitching rubber in game two of St. Louis’ series in Miami. Pregame coverage begins at 5:15 pm Tuesday on ESPN 103.1 and 1580 AM KTGR.
