Cardinals Announce Carpenter Setback

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Tuesday that Chris Carpenter cannot continue throwing and his pitching career is in jeopardy.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said it was “unlikely” that Carpenter would pitch for the Redbirds in 2013. Carpenter missed most of 2012 recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome, throwing in just six games last year.

Mozeliak said they would not make a corresponding move in free agency, “We feel confident in what we have going into Spring Training.” Kyle Lohse, who was second on the team with 16 wins, remains unsigned as a free agent.
