10/13 2:40 p.m.: Mizzou Athletics has formally announced the Tiger men’s basketball team will play the University of Kansas in a charity game for hurricane relief on Sunday, October 22nd at Sprint Center in Kansas City. The game will tip off at 3 p.m.
The two schools together got an NCAA waiver to play the extra exhibition game, which is being dubbed “Showdown for Relief.” The game will not be televised, but will instead be broadcast on the Tiger Radio Network. KTGR will carry the broadcast with a start time to be determined.
“The opportunity to use the platform of college basketball to help so many people in need is the most important aspect of this event,” Mizzou head coach Cuonzo Martin said in a statement. “Buy tickets to this game, but also please donate if you are able to, as there are people in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who need our support. This scrimmage will not only be fun for fans of Mizzou and Kansas, but also for people all over the world.”
All the proceeds from the game will be given to organizations the five living former U.S. Presidents have come together to support: the Houston Harvey Relief Fund, the Rebuild Texas Fund, the Florida Disaster Fund, Juntos y Unidos Por Puerto Rico and the Fund for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Tickets for the 18,000-seat arena will be split between the two schools, with the goal of selling out the arena and raising in the area of $1 million. Mizzou says Tiger Scholarship Fund members will get a first shot to buy tickets based on their donor rank, and those members will be contacted by email. A limited number of tickets for Mizzou students will be offered for purchase starting on Tuesday, October 17. Any remaining tickets will be sold exclusively online at www.sprintcenter.com starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.
