It took extras once again in Chicago, but the Cardinals got a much needed 5-4 victory in 10 innings.
After a crushing loss Friday in 11 innings, the Cardinals turned the tables on the Cubs on Saturday. Carlos Beltran hit his 30th home run on the season to tie the game at 4, sending it to extra innings for the second consecutive afternoon.
In the 10th, Matt Carpenter and Brian Anderson drew 2 out walks before John Jay doubled home Carpenter to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead. Jason Motte entered in the bottom of the inning and struck out the side to give the Cardinals the win. It was Motte’s 36th save of the season.
The news wasn’t all good, however, as Yadier Molina left the game in the 9th inning with back spasms. The team does not expect them to cause him to miss time.
With the win, the Cardinals increase their Wild Card lead to 2.5 games over the Brewers and 3 games over the Dodgers with just 10 games remaining.
St. Louis looks to take the series from the Cubs this afternoon at Wrigley Field. It will be Lance Lynn getting the start in place of Jake Westbrook, who is fighting a strained oblique muscle. Cards and Cubs gets underway with pregame beginning at 12:25pm on KAT Country 94.3, the Eagle 93.9 and The Big 900 KFAL.
