The last time the St. Louis Cardinals celebrated like this, it was Game 6 of the 2011 World Series.
Matt Adams delivered a walkoff two-run homer down the right field line, giving St. Louis a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday night at Busch Stadium. Adams’ second hit of the night was the third and final safety for the home team, which had seen a line drive double play erase Jon Jay on second base to end the eighth frame in a scoreless tie.
Adam Wainwright wasn’t at his sharpest, but was effective through seven innings of work, allowing seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Sam Freeman stranded the bases loaded in the Pirate eighth, and Pat Neshek worked a hitless ninth to be in line for the win.
Matt Adams and the Cardinals will look to use the late win as momentum heading into Tuesday night’s game against Pittsburgh. Vance Worley will take the hill for the Pirates against Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez. Pregame coverage from St. Louis begins at 6:20 pm on ESPN 103.1 and 1580 AM KTGR.
